Pelion and Liquid Sunshine

After a sweltering summer I actually wasn’t too disappointed to hear the downpour of rain outside my window… My excitement wasn’t shared by my visiting Canadian friends expecting sun, beach and fun. With grief likened to a death, we reluctantly decided to go for a drive to view the beautiful sites via car. Amidst the omnipresent mist we wound our way to the traditional village of Tsangarada to view a 1000 year old plane tree (awesome.) After viewing the massive tree which apparently takes 18 men to encircle it, we pointed the nose of the car towards a beach called Milopotamos. For the moment the mist had cleared and the rain subsided, so I knew that this was the moment to attempt a swim. Unfortunately the surf was large and the bright blue sea had turned a brownish red from all the runoff. Personally an exfoliating mud bath wasn’t what I wanted, so we elected to head to the fish taverna for a bite of lunch. This did not disappoint. Saganaki and cheese croquettes, Skordalia and Melitsana salata, locally made bread, but the star of the meal was a wonderful plate of fish, the catch of the day, fried to perfection. Despite the liquid sunshine nothing beats eating a wonderful meal while perched on the cliff watching the waves roll in…
