Market: Week 2

As the heat rises and entrenches itself in the city, people retreat and head to the beaches. It is an odd and inversely proportional phenomena that I witness as summer deepens. The fruit and vegetables enter their sweet spot, and yet there seem to be less people in the city to purchase and enjoy them. With that said, as I navigated the laiki I saw something new, the first plums of the season. My buddy the fruit guy thrust into my hand a purply black plum and said, “Try it, it’s super sweet!” As I bit into it, juice seemed to explode from the fruit, showering me with it’s sweet offerings. My friend was right, they were sweet so I promptly bought a kilo. At the end of the morning, feeling like a sherpa, I managed to get everything upstairs and packed away into it’s appropriate place.

So here’s the tally, total cost 23.50 Euros:

  • Tomatoes
  • Red and green sweet bell peppers
  • Green onions
  • Eggplants
  • Zucchini (with flowers)
  • Cucumbers
  • Okra
  • Green beans
  • Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Eggs
  • Plums
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Bananas (the only thing not local)
